A decent training program is essential to progression when it comes to strength training, and there are a few reasons why.

Learning the skill of lifting

Lifting weights is a skill. It takes time and practise to be able to master all of the movements. So when you are first getting into training, having a program that follows a structure where exercises are repeated weekly for a fixed length of time, means you get time to do the same thing and just simply get better at it.

The first probably 2-3 weeks for most beginners is just learning the exercises and feeling what they should feel like. If you had no program and did random exercises every time you came into the gym, how would you get better at it and feel more confident doing it?

Progressive overload

Your body gets stronger fast! After a few weeks, the weights that seemed impossible on the first week become a warm up weight and you are ready to add more plates onto your bar. By following a program, you're able to track weight used on exercises and make sure each week you're trying to do a little bit more. This is how we keep our body adapting, changing and growing more muscle.

A Clear Plan

You will know exactly what you're doing when you get into the gym. You don't need to make up a workout, or ask yourself "have I done enough?". With a program you have a clear structure which is going to make being consistent with the gym so much easier.

There are plenty of free ones out there for general strength training, and i know its not as simple as just going and doing it, because theres obviously technique and knowing how to do the exercises that needs to be considered.

But even if you only do machines at your gym, tracking your total reps and weight used each week is a great way to ensure you using progressive overload.
